CAIRO, Nov 30 ― The Muslim Brotherhood has secured about 40 per cent of the votes for its party list in the first round of Egypt’s parliamentary election this week after counting so far, putting it ahead of other groups, a party source said today.
Voting in Egypt’s election is being held in three phases over six weeks. Of the total of 498 seats in the lower house up for grabs, two-thirds will be allocated proportionally according to party lists and the other third will go to individuals.
Official results from Monday and yesterday’s votes are expected later in the day. More than 50 political parties are contesting the elections, along with thousands of candidates running as independents.
